Capoeira on canvas, by Sérgio Rabinovitz
Capoeira, the Brazilian martial arts form takes a new dimension in London, in October. BCA introduced Capoeira to the London communities in 1987. To celebrate 20 years of the art form in London, and to highlight its importance as an element of resistance and social inclusion for black Brazilians, as well as the work of UK-based capoeira masters and instructors, BCA has designed the Capoeira Encounters of the First Kind Festival, in two phases. The Festival’s first phase took off in September. Capoeira and the need for it to become one of Brazil’s Immaterial National Heritages was dissected in seminars. This October, very fittingly scheduled to coincide with Black History Month, Capoeira will hit London with all its might. This is undoubtedly the most comprehensive Capoeira Festival the UK will have ever seen. BCA is grateful for the support of the Embassy of Brazil in London and the Ministry of Culture in Brasilia, our partners in the initiative, without which the festival would not have been possible. Join us at the BCA House, the Islington Arts and Media School and the London School of Capoeira to discover why this popular Brazilian art form has become a passion world-wide.
